Looking for activities beyond the beach? The Emerald Coast is rich with biodiversity and natural lands, making it ideal for eco-tourism. A recent Northwest Florida Daily News article highlighted some of the fun eco-tourism pursuits in our area and inspired us to create our own list. This week, we'll be highlighting some of our favorite nature-themed adventures.

 One of our favorite natural attractions is the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center in Freeport. A short drive from Destin, FL  puts guests in the midst of what is considered the sixth most biodiverse area in the continental U.S. It is a fun, educational center, which focuses on biodiversity and encourages conservation, preservation and restoration. Scientists from around the world converge on this ecological "hot spot" and thanks to the South Walton TDC on specified days it's open to the public.

Now through Sept. 1, families are invited to experience the center Thursday - Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (after Sept. 1 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays). There is also special Saturday programming. On Sat., Aug. 25, Lisa Miller will host a show & tell about birds of prey.  In addition to the many species of reptiles, the center is home to many species of birds, including hawks, an owl and two magnificent Bald Eagles.
